All I can say is, don't buy an HP. Their customer service is terrible and they treat everyone as if they are retarded. Sent in my laptop with a busted keyboard, burned out hard-drive and a broken fan, got it back a month later with a dusted fan, replaced hard-drive and the same busted keyboard telling me it was "sticky-keys". The "E" key wouldn't register without a little warming-up, a.k.a. repeated mashing. My grandpa bought a replacement keyboard eventually and put it in.

A month later, the fan dies again and the entire system is prone to over-heating. Three year warrantee... could have saved the money and replaced everything myself for cheaper for what they did to it.

So yeah, don't go HP. Dell customer service is nice though if that helps. :)

I have a dell inspiron 1520 that I use for business trips a lot.

Its not too spetacular but powerful enough to play wow at 40 fps with almost maxed settings (wotlk actually made me lower it a bit but still.)

I ended up paying about $900 for it since i bought it used from a buddy that only had it two months, but new I don't believe they run more than about $1200.

If your looking for a gaming laptop you cant go wrong with alienware.

*edit*

On a side note, dell seems to out source all customer support so every time you call you get someone from indiana or india lol, meaning a lot of times its very hard to understand them.

Okay, so get the best deal you can for specs wise... and go for a mainstream company...

no random company no one has heard of or that was recently baught by (dell, hp, or someone), cause what you really get is re-labled peices of crap.

Make absolutely sure that the laptop does not have integrated graphics, nvidia cards are nice.....

2 gb of ram or more

2 cores or more, 2.8 for dual or 2.4 for quad, or faster....

don't worry about extra software from the company, it is always cheaper somewhere else...

and when going through the ordering process, make sure you tell the person you are talking to, you do not want any additional software installed.... ONLY THE OS (be it ubuntu, xp, or vista)

If it is dell, make sure you opt out of all aditional hardware and software you can..., while this helps you will still get stupid dell or hp stuff and probably want to re-format right off the bat....

And in line with the above, make absolutely sure that the laptop comes with an operating system disk, not a stinkin recovery disk, not a stupid recovery partition, but a windows disk that you can use with the cd key on the bottom of your laptop, make sure to get this even if it costs a bit more to have them send it.... trust me... a clean install as soon as you get it will do wonders!

All the above is from my own personal experience.... and the reformat is to get rid of all the proprietary crap, windows has drivers for everything, trust me, if it doesn't, go get ONLY that driver from dell, hp, whoever.....

My 2 cents, and a bit...

Stab, you probably understand these guys more than I do--but I'm interested in the alienware laptops (now owned by Dell) Hmm...maybe I'll just send it to rush to.."clean install"

While I appreciate all your comments, I think you guys miss-understood me a bit. I'm looking for a good place to buy one. Was looking at Newegg, but they seem to offer a lot of obscure brands and was even looking for somewhere that might do a little customization. As Rush said, getting a pre-made sucks due to the amount of pre-installed crap, so trying to avoid that as much as possible. I know they are up and coming again, but kinda trying to avoid Dell due to past experiences.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, Stab. I only purchase my computers from the manufacturers themselves, so can't help you there.

Kea, as for the "clean install". Alienware puts practically nothing on their computers. Had my OS, Nero for my DVD burner and the OS restore program and that was it. If you are open to it, I would suggest a desktop over a laptop for better specs at the same price.

If you want a laptop for gaming, try ASUS.

I have had good luck with the few Toshiba Laptops that I have worked on/with. We pretty much always buy Dell here at work, so I don't get a lot of exposure to other brands. We have a lot of iBook/MacBooks, but they are over priced for what you get. I found this software while looking for other things. I haven't tried it, but looks like it might be something to check into if/when you get something. http://pcdecrapifier.com/home.
