Its definitly an error that refered to your hard drive partition being corrupt, as far as I know there is no way to fix it... Maybe some googling would have done you some good but if there was no important files your best bet was to just reformat like you did.
If it happens again i'd look at getting a new harddrive, they arent very expensive if you want a standard one. If your harddrive is starting to go out it would be wise to backup frequently if you have important files you dont want to lose again.
Glad you got it fixed though.

It sounds like your MBR (Master Boot Record) is fubar. Can you get to the recovery console?

Well, the way I have mine setup is........ I have two 500 gig hard drives. One is with windows xp and I have only the basic crap on it in order to run my Steam games and other small bs stuff. The other I run Ubuntu Linux for surfing, email, movies, spreadsheets, DVD burning and everything else. Therefore, I don't have to worry about getting a virus or something along that line while surfing the net while in Linux. The windows side is used only for playing my games, nothing else.

Never had a problem in 5 years. As the article stated, you would have to run it from root, as I do not. And I only get my programs from the Ubuntu sites and repositories, nothing from outside unless I know for sure that the program is safe. I only run under user and never root, plus I have a different password for root than I do for my user account. I have placed virus's on my Linux machine desktop and tried to open them, they would not open. It could not recognize the file. I feel safe with what I have. But I agree that out there somewhere there is a virus just waiting. But the thing to remember is you have to know where your programs are coming from and trust the site that you are downloading from. I have not had any problems since I went to Linux many years ago, and I do not regret leaving windows. I only use windows for Steam and a few other games. I have a new program from codeweavers called "crossover". It works great. I can run steam in Linux with no problem.
