This Eurogamer Interview reveals that Over 1.3 million people log in to play Call of Duty 4 on Xbox live every day. Those numbers elevate the game even beyond multiplayer darling Halo 3, which has just under a million daily players. Moreover, they don't include the formidable numbers generated by PC and PS3 gamers going online.
Years ago when we founded GameSpy, we were hopelessly addicted to online PC shooters like the venerable Quake. We expected that someday consoles would go online and, once people got a taste of taking down real human opponents, console gaming wouldn't be the same. It took longer than we anticipated (I remember how excited we were about the Dreamcast built-in modem in 1999), and it took Microsoft's very aggressive push with Xbox Live to make it happen, but online gaming is now integral to the console world and it's here to stay. Now if only I was as good at aiming with a controller as I was with a mouse and keyboard...
