Here we can share all the wonderful games that we find that cost nothing at all.
I will start by linking to http://playthisthing.com/ , a great site that reviews independent games and has lots of download links.
Here are some of my favorites:
Gamma Bros: http://pixeljam.com/ One of the best retro-styled games of recent times I've had the pleasure of playing. It's very similar to an old-school arcade shooter, with 8-bit music and pixel graphics that are just beautiful.
Dino Run: Another great game, also on the site above.
Chivalry is Not Dead: http://chivalry.deirdrakiai.com/ This one is pretty different. It took me a while to figure out that almost all actions I chose directly affected the game. For example, you can try to make the princess like you more, but obviously if you kill the guard to get at her she's not going to be very trusting towards you at all. In fact, she'll be pretty mean in future dialog. Multiple paths and endings give this game good replay value.
An Act of Murder: http://playthisthing.com/act-murder An EXCELLENT text adventure. It's a murder mystery, and you must gather the evidence, alibis, and witness statements in time to solve the case. The best part? The solution is randomly generated so it's got replay value! Oh, and if you get stuck, there is an EXCELLENT help system included, but don't use it too much... that spoils the fun.
I Wanna Be The Guy: http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/ You'll never beat this. NEVER. It's possible, yes, but I dare any of you to actually do it. Sample gameplay video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPBgxWyXYKI
