I am currently looking for a new computer to call my very own, but am on a budget. Hopefully some of you will be able to help me get a good deal, but here is a list of what will and will not work.

1. I don't need a preassembled computer. I have operating systems on cd-roms, I know how to put together a computer from a barebones kit, so that should save a bit of money.

2. Data storage need not be excessive. 100 or 200 GB is fine.

3. Graphics card... this will probably be the main investment. Obviously it has to run games well, but it doesn't need to be top of the line, as I tend to play older games more often.

4. Mouse and keyboard... no frills, optical mouse, plain keyboard.

5. Monitor... can the new thin LCD ones actually be trusted? I still use a CRT. If it turns out my old CRT still works, I can save the cost of a new monitor.

6. Speakers. Probably looking at no frills again, but a subwoofer would be nice.

Oh jeez.....you missed a pretty good bargain on a quad core with 4gb ram and an 8800 gt in it during the woot-off the other day. It was 1089.99.

That's not a bad system, very similar to what I am running here @ home.
Personally I would never spend that much on a sound card, in fact I use the on board sound most times, and if you are going to spend that kind of money on a board I would change it out to this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024. Additionally, I would never use a Seagate drive, especially since they are re-badged Maxtors, Samsung or WD primarily for desktop drives. If you go for the Q6600 get it from clubit.com, they will guarantee you a G0 stepping core, which are the best from that model cpu in terms of power consumption and overclocking ability. The on-board nic on the board I linked above is more than sufficient, it has dual gig nics. Do not buy a PATA cd rom, especially since the SATA drive is the same price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106070.
This is the cooler I bought, it is nice, but requires the right kind of case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001.
