I currently have the recent version of Mcaffee and have been advised that it slows my PC. Should I unistall it entirely and install AVG Free? If so, are there any special details I should take care of in the process? Also, how much does it help my speed in gaming etc?
Thanks, Tracker

I had Norton and was told the same thing. I uninstalled Norton entirely and downloaded the free version of AVG and have noticed a real difference in gaming and other applications. It seemed to be a big enough difference that I did the same thing to all our computers at work.
I'm not a whiz with computers or math like some of the Community so I can't give you statistics or anything, but everyone I know who has dumped McAffee or Norton for AVG free has been glad they did. I am for sure.

I have McAfee and don't really notice much difference. I ONLY have the antivirus tho, not the whole security system crap. That will definitely slow you down. I don't know if you guys had the full blown thing or not.

That said, AVG is a great little antivirus app.

I think my version of McAffee is the basic one, but maybe I should uninstall it and try AVG and see if it makes a difference.

I use AVG free on all of my systems and I have no problems with it and performance.

AVG free uses about 35mb of RAM.
Avast!, Norton, and McAfee are huge memory hogs. If you use the ZoneAlarm or OnlineArmor firewall's I would switch to COMODO free firewall, as it is the #1 free firewall and uses about 20mb of RAM.

Okay here is the thing. If you go get avg free edition it is the best thing to use, just recently they added a new feature that I don't like. If you use IE or firefox make sure you disable the avg link scanner that it also installs, don't disable it in avg just disable it in IE or firefox, that way it won't tell you somethings not working, in IE go to: tools>internet options>programs>manage add-ons> then disable the avg one(s)...

That is the most efficient thing to do. and this way it won;t slow down google searches.

if this post is TL and u DR, just read lines 2, 4, 6 and 8

ok, late post but whatever,
i have a version of McAfee, too;
some sort of business/trading version that comes with a buttload of extra, non-customizable, non-user friendly stuff.
and now i'm looking at installing avg free...
but before i do that,
what free programs are out there that are the most similar to mcafee's QuickClean/shredder???
(the app that deletes unneeded files by the GBs by passing them thru a "shredder" several times, useful i think)
thats like the only thing i like about mcafee that i'd like to have...

Hmm...

Try Eraser> http://www.heidi.ie/node/6 All you do is right click on the file you want to delete and click "Erase" you can choose how many "pass's" you want.

If your looking for a privacy cleaner try CCleaner> http://www.ccleaner.com/ Work's very well and can also fix some problems with your registry.

ok, I'll try either of the 2 maybe.

as long as it cleans my recycle bin, temp files, lost file fragments, registry, cache, cookies, useless restore points, and browser history all as one program. at least one of the 2 does this, yeah? which one would u prefer vette?

CCleaner does most of those except lost file fragments. I would go with CC.

Well, I think a better program as far as shredding file fragments is spybot: search and destroy. It has the shredder you speak of, registry cleaner, spyware removal, and even an enhanced add/remove programs feature that is very handy.

Try that out, for myself I use avg free, spybot, and adaware free. Those three keep me running clean for about 4+ years now and no slowdown noticed. (results may vary)

Very helpful, and thanks for ressurecting this post. I have a tendency to screw things up on computers, so details are essential for my tiny mind to get it right. heheh

I use AVG 8 antivirus n anti spyware, with firethreat. If I need more security Spyware Terminator, Comodo firewall. CC is nice free application 2.
